Got a bit fixated with painting mushrooms this evening.. just such a nice shape (I know what you are thinking and no I don’t mean in that way), I like the fact that they grow hidden away and might kill you/make a nice dinner/or both.

I’ve also been working on some new designs for ‘I’m not sure what’, maybe button badges? I’ll scan and upload them and you can tell me your favourites. Hmm think the mushrooms might end up as a tea towel design eventually?

I have been working away on him and the book project for a while now (eyelids well and truly propped up with match sticks). I’m so pleased with the end result I thought I’d share..

Here is the initial sketch so you can see the process:

Frozen under foot

Glass blade, grass blade, frozen-under-foot blade,
Frosted by the cold of an icy winter’s morn,
Its green blade, ghost blade, lost-amongst-the-frost blade,
Crunches with each step, as the day begins to dawn.
And as the sun advances,
A warming sunbeam chances
Across the ice-white-frosted-sparkling, melting shards of grass.
And slow, the frosty winter scene
Turns from endless white to green,
And lingers through the chilly day,
Until the frost returns its way -
As night, white-night, descends.

There’s something very intimidating and exciting about a brand new, pristine, quite expensive, sheet of paper..

I get over this by launching in with the biggest brush I can find - just to break up the whiteness. This is for my first children’s book proposal, it’s going to be submitted to an interested party in the next few months.. no pressure there then.

I am working with another author and hope my illustrations can live up to expectations - its all been very positive so far and as you can (maybe?) tell by the pic below I’m working on a flamingo character, which is great fun as they are already ridiculous, there’s not much for me to improve on!

I have so many ideas at the moment I keep suffering from brain freeze . There is so much crowding in at once that I have to make a lot of lists to unjam the creative flow - but that’s better than being uninspired.. just the usual mix of too much to do, too little time to do it, very late evenings and wondering who that person is I live with, as we bump into each other in the kitchen occasionally - it will all be worth it in the end – thanks Trev

PS who said the title quote - does anyone know?

Dimpled cherubs and sunny daffodils..

I have just finished some new illustrations for Honeytree Publishing - cherubs are so lovely to draw , you can really go to town with the dimpled bottoms and fat knees: it reminded me of ‘life drawing‘ which I used to love.. - the skinny models were so uninspiring as there were no folds, or patches of light and shade – just sharp angles and pointy elbows.

There are also some Easter bunnies and daffodils to cheer you up!
